Final Design

We have a live, working site with a logged out and logged in state. The logged in state is for contestants, and we call it the gameboard. This page documents all the parts of the site that we have live now, the main concepts of a SPOKED game, as well as artifacts we've made to get excitement around SPOKED.

Main Concepts

For a SPOKED game, you need up to twelve people split into two teams. To start, you will track your bike rides and create lines on the map for two weeks. Because this is about happiness, you compete by earning smiles for your team. Smiles are the currency, and are earned by riding miles.

Collaborate on teams

login

A team gives contestants the sense of collaborating on a shared goal—on something bigger than themselves. We first started the game as an individual competition. What happened was that the people at the bottom soon felt defeated and had no reason to push themselves. So, teams engage everyone in the effort to win. Even though you may never reach the level of an avid biker, or even if you miss out on a few days, every mile still counts.

Create with color

Every contestant has their own color. With your color, you contribute the patterns that make up your everyday life. Your patterns say something about you, and this gives people something to talk about, beyond miles. As we saw on our thread prototype, seeing your rides on a map inspires new routes and creativity too.

Julie is a consistent commuter, but once she saw her commuting path being drawn over and over, she wanted to get more adventurous, and took her bike all the way to Jersey!

Kelli got more creative and made her mark by drawing a bike with her bike.

Willy spiced things up by making it his goal to bike down different avenues each day.

Compete for smiles

The time frame of two weeks allows people to try something new without committing for a long time. But also, enough time to ‘practice’ getting on the bike and begin to form a habit. We’ve built in a mechanic to reinforce this behavior of getting on your bike called SuperSPOKED days! On the 3rd day you ride in a row you’re rewarded double for your miles and you can push yourself extra to earn more smiles for your bike miles.

Web site

The web site explains breaks down the features of a SPOKED game, and has a way to collect interest through a web form. It also offers a short video featuring some SPOKED contestants' experiences with the game, and a link to a demo of the gameboard.

Gameboard

Contestants can access the gameboard by logging in from iamspoked.com. The gameboard framework is in the same color as the person logging in. The gameboard offers different views; everyone's patterns, one person's patterns, or comparing two people. It's also possible to go into an animation mode of the rides.

Artifacts

At the end of the game not only have the contestants biked their butts off, but they have made a beautiful work of art! There's both an individual version where a contestant color is emphasized, and the collaborative version where all colors get to shine. The art has so far been distributed in the form of a virtual poster (for Twitter/Facebook sharing), a physical wall poster, and a postcard format.
