Audience

SPOKED is for transportation riders, rather than fitness bikers. There are people out there that ride to get around, to discover and explore, rather than mainly to burn calories and break records:

“I haven’t competed in tours de anything, and I didn’t start biking [...] to reach some personal life goal. I do it simply because it makes me happy.”
—Mandi Woodruff, The Bike Writer

There are also people that could become part of this group. There are people with under-utilized bikes, that could be riding them regularly. SPOKED is both for the avid biker and the biker-to-be. Out of the people that have already played a SPOKED game, a few bike types (personas) have emerged. We believe the following five SPOKED contestants represent the breadth of our target audience.

The newborn biker

Willy Wong

Willy
“SPOKED got me to ride every day for two weeks, which is great!”

When Willy bought a bike, he used it 5 times in the first year. He has never used it for transportation. Rather, for leisure rides and group tours. Willy often wears a suit and attends a lot of meetings. He most often takes a cab to meetings and rides the subway to work.

The consistent commuter

Julie Hardee

Julie
“My lines for my daily commute got really thick and fat!”

Julie is a bike advocate. She blogs about it (offering tips for lady bikers) and attends community board meetings. She is one of the first to know when the city announces a new bike path to be painted. Julie lives in Manhattan, and commutes to work. She generally sticks to her territory and is not known for venturing outside of her commuter path.

The hard-core biker

Dave Dawson

Dave
“I got to see my blue color on the map, and I guess I got a little competitive.”

Dave has been riding his bike for transportation for six years. It is a very natural thing for him. He doesn’t consider himself to be very competitive. He authors his own design blog and leads several side projects while working full time at a design agency.

The bike artist

Kelli Anderson

Kelli
“I thought the shapes were really cool, but wouldn’t it be fun to draw an intentional picture?!”

Kelli uses her bike to get everywhere. She believes that it is the best and easiest way to get around the city. Rain, shine or cold winter weather, Kelli bikes and has tactics to deal with the weather. Kelli is a freelance graphic designer, and works from home. Though she does not have a regular commute, Kelli does not hesitate riding 7 miles to try the best donuts in Brooklyn.

The bike borrower

Prachi Pundeer

Prachi
“I had never used the gears before, so I figured that out on my first day of riding.”

Prachi lives in New York, and does not own a bike. Though, she is curious, and continually looking for ways to get outside. She is commonly known by her friends as “Paparachi”, because she loves to take pictures and is often caught behind the camera.
